Intelligence the complement to choices

“When a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man.”

Life generally is completely based on choices such that if one desires a different result one should opt to make a different choice. Someone once told me, the choices that we do make, determine who we are, choices simply shape us. Personally, one thing I believe is that the choices one makes are greatly influenced by one’s intelligence. In order to make the right choice one should be intelligent enough to distinguish good from bad, profit from loss, success from failure etc. Intelligence in that case I do not mean a grade ‘A’ a grade ‘C’ student. We all know of people who were good in class but seem to have failed in life because of the choices they made.

To be intelligent means to have the ability to grasp more knowledge or to make use of existing knowledge you have. Intelligence is a cup, knowledge is what you put in it. Simply put, you might know what a car can do, how to drive it and how to use it to reach your destination- that is intelligence. You can also know what a car can do, but you don’t know how to drive (make use of it) to reach your intended destination; that is knowledge. Knowledge without intelligence is like having enough savings but not knowing what to do with it. You might be knowledgeable, but not necessarily intelligent. You might know a lot about the choices you want to make, but where you apply that knowledge and how you do it to make informed choices, that depicts ones intelligence.

We begin making choices the minute we wake up in the morning. We are responsible to make the choice of whether to wake up early or even extend our sleep. Choices are part and parcel of our daily lives. Choices are the ones that are able to tell the people around us who truly we are. Choices enhance and at many times if not all contribute to shape our character, morals and the first impression we give to the other person. If I choose to wear carelessly and walk in a group of people, their judgment would be based on the choice I made compared to if I chose to dress responsibly. Similarly, choosing to think before we speak will have a positive or destructive impact to our audience.

Most people tend to believe that everything does happen with a reason which I agree but they forget the choices they make would always be followed by a consequence. On the contrary, intelligent people would dare to be different from the choices they do make. Inarguably, people live their lives based on their interest. They will associate themselves with the interest they have in a particular thing/scenario but how successful they will become in the pursuit of their interests or goals is determined by the choices they make. For instance, if two people may have an interest in business, their intelligence and choices they make would differentiate how established their business would be. Every choice brings with it some good, some bad, some lesson or even some luck, some we regret and some we are proud of.

Well, as put forth by Abe Gubegna, “Every day in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death.”
It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better be running. This is a classic case of putting intelligence gathered overtime into practice.

To conclude, we are who we are because of the choices we make. Don’t you think?
