Be the lifebuoy in your life

“Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.”

How you wake up each morning has a tremendous impact on your day. As a young person there is nothing as exciting as knowing that you have an ambition to pursue, goals to achieve in life at a certain age and the feeling that you have to hustle hard to make it happen. Because it must happen. What wakes us up should be something so strong to keep us on the move.

Since we were young we’ve been tuned to keep focus…to always think ahead. Remember the good old days when your classmate, teacher, relatives, siblings, your parents (of course!) would ask…what you’d like to be when you grow up? I wonder if growing up will ever end because ambitions keep being shaped sharper and sharper each minute that passes on.

One thing with people especially where I come from is that we disregard talent and other career goals because our idea of ambition is centered on becoming a lawyer, a doctor, an engineer and so on. We have what we call “the right kind of ambition” which is absolutely wrong.

Let’s first look at the meaning of the word ambition.

An ambition or rather being ambitious is an eager or strong desire to achieve something. Ambitions are should not only be limited to what we perceive them to be, but include every passion, dream, goal, and desire that someone intends to achieve.

Ambitions as mentioned, are there to motivate you and to make you look forward to waking up each day. I met three different young people (who actually are my friends) a while back, all of them are almost done with their courses and the future subject came up, so I asked one simple question, what is your ambition in life?

Number one: “I do not know what I want, I am just taking life as it comes”
Number two: “I want to become a doctor”
Number three: “I want to be a successful designer”

Knowing the kind of families and cultures we come from, number two would probably be the one, praised and encouraged in the society because he/she has “the right kind of ambition” Knowing each of them quite personally I would actually tell you that number three is most likely to succeed. Ambition can only be a reality if persistence and hard work come into play. One could talk and announce what they want to do and what they to be, but if their actions and behavior do not compliment their words then their ambition is as good as not knowing what they want in life.

Now, number one is another case and that is the situation which most of us find ourselves in. 80% of us, tend not to know what we want to do because we are caught in the middle of pursuing our passion and pleasing our family member especially our parents. We want to live up to their dreams instead of living up to ours. We do not want to feel like disappointments because again, I go back to having the idea that maybe our ambitions are not “the right kind of ambitions.”

To be able to set a goal, you need to find out what you are passionate about, what type of human being are you? Do you like math? Are you sporty? Are you artistic? Do you like sciences? Are you talkative? Let what you want to do go hand in hand with who you are and/or what you love doing.

Ambitions are needed to keep you focused and motivated in life. We all have days, we question our existence, where we question the meaning of life…Yes, I know you have been there because I have too. At the end of the day, if you do not have an ambition, that question would linger in your mind, longer than it is supposed to.

We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community…our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sake and our own.
