In the current world, we know things to be much different than they used to be. Had anyone told us about a pandemic, a global racial injustice movement and fight for change in late 2019 or even early 2020, we would probably brush it off as if we’re talking about a movie series. Several have lost their jobs, gotten pay cuts and even been demoted due to the pandemic, while on the other hand black people and everyone behind the black live matter movement are either directly or indirectly affected by the injustice towards people of colour (POC). Some are facing both problems and other problems that arise as consequences of the issues mention.
One of the most important things in this period is our mental health and the ability to handle everything that’s around us while maintaining our sanity. As we help ourselves, we can also help others in the process.
Here are 10 ways of looking after our mental health:
- Follow the guidelines
– Whether for the pandemic or the protests, follow the guidelines to maintain peace and order. Each country and local government has rules on how to handle the pandemic and in other cases, demonstrations. It is important not only for your sake but the sake of others, to follow the rules placed so at to help safeguard our own health and the health of other.
- Make time for yourself and create a routine
– In a time where our thoughts are all over the place, we need to take a few steps back and go back to our own thoughts. We need to remember that, out “normal” schedules still do matter for us to create a balance in the destabilization we currently are facing.
– Creating routines helps us maintain order in our lives and in our systems. We need to understand that our routines help us stay organized and reduce stress.
- Schedule the time you spend on social media
– There is a lot going on, on social media and most of it isn’t positive. When we keep feeding our minds with so much negativity, we end up getting drained o a point of deteriorating to depression. With the pandemic, racism and so much uncertainty, we can easily lose ourselves in the crisis. Take some time off and read a book, watch your favorite series, cook your favorite meal or exercises.
- Connect with your feelings
– There is nothing wrong or abnormal about everything that you’re feeling during these times. Whether anger, insecurity, uncertainty, impatience, whatever it may be, your feelings are completely okay. Don’t avoid them, connect with them, understand them.
Understand what you’re feeling and deal with it. You are not alone.
- Be kind to yourself and others
– With everything, it’s easy to start falling into a dark rabbit hole of endless negativity which turns into hatred, meanness and more. Mean to ourselves, who we are and what we generally stand for. We can easily become mean to others as well because of every negative feeling inside us. It’s important that we focus of finding that little ray of sunshine, which we can hold on to, so as to positively deal with everything that is around and within us.
– Now more than ever, it’s important to be in-tune with your inner self. The many questions posted in these trying times mostly require responses from within. We need to meditate and seek ourselves from deep within. Most of us are having issues especially on how to deal with everything that is happening and how to respond to it all. Don’t let anyone pressure you on how to deal or whether or not to respond. How you do so is up to you, and what so many of us are dealing with is the fight within and before we deal with that, the external chaos might just weigh you down.
Trust the process, work towards being the very best version of yourself so that you can be able to handle everything that we all are going through in the world today. There is so much that we HAVE to take in, but the most important thing is to create an environment around and within you that can take you aways, even if it’s just for a moment, for you to recharge and reboot.
