Toxic work environments has sadly become common in this day and age. Where work environments are no longer conducive for most of us to be productive. Our places of work should be peaceful and conducive as they are the places we spend the better part of our days and our week. Toxic work places often influence our mental health state and make us become not only unproductive but also makes individuals become stressed and depressed.
How do we notice that our workplace is toxic?
- Passive-aggressive communication
This can be from colleagues and also from leaders. However, it quite often than not the aggression is from the leaders.
- Narcissistic leaders and managers
Narcissistic traits in leaders and managers often lead to toxic work places because narcissists always insist on always being right, they belittle others, especially those they perceive to be inferior.
- Extended work hours
It is okay to attend to emergencies when needed however, toxic work environments force individuals to work over time and sometimes with no acknowledgement or renumeration of the extra hours. Also, in some work places, lack of response and extra work can lead to consequences.
- Lack of motivation and constant illness
It is evident that employees are lacking motivation to work and even show up to work. As a result, there are constant no shows, and employees calling in sick from work.
- Cliques and rumors
A lot of rumors circulate around especially with people’s personal lives. Colleagues also form cliques whereby there are certain people who associate only to themselves, making it also hard to work with others.
Sadly, when we discuss on matters toxic work environments, there are so many people who do not have the option of leaving their work places more so because they are fully dependent on the income. Therefore, they do not know how to handle the situation.
Here are several ways to handle toxic work environments if one cannot leave their workplace.
- Focus on work-life balance

- Create networks at work and outside work
At work, rather than sticking to the same individuals, it is important to create networks all across the work place and especially outside so as to have the balance
- Engage in activities that make you happy
It is important to that engages (especially after work) in activities that makes one happy and activities that one enjoys. This way you are able to let off the steam that comes with work.
- Try to find an exit strategy
In as much as it is okay to find solutions to problems, it is also important to understand that staying in toxic environments can subconsciously affect and influence you. Therefore, if possible, work on a strategy an exit strategy and a way to sustain yourself in other ways. This could be a different job or a business.
Always remember that you are if you are not okay mentally and emotionally, your output will be useless and unproductive. It is important to understand that there is nothing worth more than your well-being and health. Take care of yourself first so you can take care of your work and your life.
